The Aka:we Canoe Club, located on Six Nations of The Grand River, has been open since 1999. They have graciously agreed to co-host Day Of A Thousand Canoes. (Aka:we is the Mohawk word for paddle)
They offer traditional canoe, Olympic Style (high kneeling) Canoe, Kayak (both recreational & racing), Outrigger Canoe and Dragon Boat. Club members have competed in races such as a 24km race around Toronto Island, Dragon Boat competition around the world (China) and local events at Christie and Kelso parks!
The club is non-profit and runs on a volunteers. They are usually open at the end of May and run through to September, depending on the weather. Aka:we is also affiliated with CKC (Canoe Kayak Canada) and have strong relationships with many other clubs in Western Ontario.
You will be able to find out more about the Aka:we Canoe Club at the event – consider becoming a member and keeping this traditional adventure alive! The club is open to everyone; you do not have to be a Six Nations member to join.
